Kane - a two year old black male with natural ears. He came to rescue from a shelter where he was turned in by his owner. He lived previously on a cable in their back yard. Kane needs leash work and is a bit lacking in the manners area. An obedience course and leash work would work wonders with this boy. He loves being around people but can be a bit rough due to lack of training. We do not have a history of Kane with kids and he's not good with cats. Kane is fine with females dogs as he has spent play time with all the female Danes at the kennel. He gets along fine with males through fences but has not been completely tested. Kane came to MAGDRL in September 2007.

Update 4/27/08 - Kane is one of the kennel dogs that we've started training in obedience. Kane needs work on the leash for sure, but after about 20 minutes, he was starting to get the hang of it and he'll only continue to improve as we work with him. He also knows sit and down. He's a strong dog, but he'd be awesome with a person on the go who loves taking their dog hiking. He LOVES to play. We sat and watched him play with a large plastic drum that was cut in half and used for the horses feed. He sat there trying to get that thing to roll down the hill and moved and maneuvered it around until he got it in the right position so he could watch it roll. John says he's done this before. This dog would be AWESOME if he had someone to give him a regular job. He's a thinker and he really wants a job and he's so handsome with that big old blockhead of his. Kane only wants to be able to love someone and share his kisses. Please someone look over the fact that he is rough around the edges and give him a chance - you won't be disappointed with this boy.

Update 6/29/08 - Kane is doing well in his foster home and is not bothered by their sister or nephew that is visiting. He is crate trained and gets along really well with the fosters male and female dog. The foster Mom takes him for a 2 mile walk/run in the morning and evening and it doesn’t tire him out. So he would be a great running or hiking companion! He does have a chewing problem and the fosters are working on keeping him more stimulated and working on the chewing. At the end of July the foster will enroll him in puppy/novice dog training and is already teaching him how to come and stay on command – with a 30 feet leash. So far he is doing pretty well. He is good at the dog park – he demonstrates a submissive behavior towards other dogs. But he really isn’t interested in other dogs at the park, but rather in all the smells.

Update 7/24/08 - Kane had his first obedience class yesterday - he did great. Got kudos :-) He listened to his name, did sit and lay perfectly. I was even able to show off his crawl and his bark on command.

He definitely is more reserved around men - he walks up to women and gets petted - no problem. But as soon as a guy walks straight up to him he gets nervous and barks. There is an assistant trainer in the class who helps me with his "fear" of men. He was just standing, not looking at Kane and feeding him treats. They are all very nice and helpful. I even had other female friends over and he had no problems - I think he is fine around men as soon as he knows he can trust them. We will continue to work on this with him. I took him to the dog park again and he did fine. He’s come a long way so far!
