Huey - Baby Huey is an approximately 4 year old mantle male with natural ears. Huey came into rescue in terrible shape: he could barely walk at all and had bald patches all over. He was surrendered at the vet office, where he went straight in for an appointment. It seems that Huey has Wobbler's syndrome, a condition where the vertebrae in the neck narrow and compress the spinal chord. Huey came in to MAGDRL in May 2008.
Update 4/24/09 - We have had the pleasure of having Huey with us now for almost 6 months. He continues to be an absolute joy! He is such a happy soul and completely devoted to all members of the family. He meets all people and dogs with a great big happy grin. Imagine his surprise when people or animals may find him intimidating! He has no clue that he is such a big dog. And so handsome! He’s the prettiest Dane I have ever had, with the most endearing face and eyes – which are used to his advantage, believe me. He is a curious boy, and wants to know what is going on at all times. He continues to have long and complicated conversations with each of us, which keep us in stitches. He has big bursts of energy several times a day, but due to his Wobblers, they don’t last too long. He will chase our other Dane, play furiously with his stuffed toys and run around and attempt to scare the deer – then will hop on the couch for a long nap. His health remains stable. You can certainly tell he has Wobbler syndrome, but HE doesn’t know it and he gets around just fine. It has become difficult to keep him from coming up the basement stairs, but they are too steep so we do not allow it. Huey still does best on carpets and shouldn’t go to a home that has many hardwood or tile floors. He will never be a dog park dog, but he likes his walks and loves to sniff out all new smells. His medical issues are currently managed by monthly acupuncture, prednisone every other day, Chinese herbs for allergies and lubrisyn. His skin allergies respond well to cortisone cream. His allergies seem to be worse in spring. He very occasionally takes tramadol or a NSAID for pain.
Huey will definitely be your best friend! He has a wonderful, joyous personality that just astounds everyone. If you take this big boy home, you will thank your lucky stars! Remember, he was raised with 4 kids of all ages and would be equally happy with kids or without. He’s very adaptable, just as long as you pay attention. He is so affectionate and funny, you will be endlessly entertained!
Update 07/16/09 - Huey is fighting many issues right now. He has had several bouts of projectile diarrhea and dehydration, initiating emergency trips to the Vets. He is battling a recurring severe skin infection that we have been unable to clear up. He has great big bald patches all over his body. He currently is taking antibiotics and a topical spray to help clear this up.
He is also on Theraderm, a homeopathic treatment for skin conditions. This is expensive, as are all his medications.
Huey has very serious Wobbler syndrome. He needs acupuncture every week or 2 weeks for his Wobblers, and goes down quickly if he does not get it. He is on prednisone, tramadol for pain, Lubrisyn for his joints, probiotics for his digestive system, Gentocin, ChlorhexiDerm and TheraDerm for skin problems and usually on antibiotics. The foster mom will be adding Fish Oil to his diet and his Vet is researching homeopathic remedies for his immune system. It seems like he always has something and is often at the Veternarian’s office. It takes him a very long time to recover.
Huey remains a joy to live with. He has a wonderful personality and loves everyone. If you can help this poor big boy, it could make a huge difference in his life in our battle to keep him well.
