Brollie - Brollie is a very handsome harlequin Dane with natural ears. There is a question regarding his age. He is either 3 or (a young) 5 years old. He is relatively small compared to the average Dane. He enjoys car rides and loves to go for long walks. He really enjoys being outside; so much so that he does not want to come back into the house. He is a big “sniffer” stopping frequently along his walks to take it all in and mark his territory. He walks well on a leash. He will pull a bit when he finds a scent that is too good to pass up. He is not into toys but will chew on the occasional bone. He has no food issues in the sense that you can take food away from him with no problem. He is a counter-surfer and LOVES food so all temptation needs to be well out of reach. He can open cabinets and also doors that have a latch handle. He is working on door knobs but as of yet has been unsuccessful. He is very agile and quick when he wants to be. He can jump a 4 foot fence easily.
Brollie is very gentle and calm but likes to play and run around with his people. He is not a watch dog by any means. He does not bark at any loud noises and does not bark when someone comes to the door. He is not bothered by thunderstorms or any other loud noises. He does seem to have some separation anxiety when left alone and you need to leave curtains open so that Brollie can see out of the windows. He does not know a lot of commands and currently knows sit and stay. He is super smart and he has already learned how to give his paw. He will get on the couch or the bed but he actually looks to you for permission to get on the furniture. He, of course, likes to be petted and his favorite is when you scratch his back near his behind. He will back himself up to you to let you know he likes it.
Brollie gets along with other dogs and seems to really like everyone. He would do well in a home with children. He would likely do well in almost any home but his ideal situation would be a very large fenced in backyard to play in with a companion. His foster parents have had him less than a week and Brollie has already won their hearts. He is a very sweet boy.
Update 7-29-11- Brollie is the smartest and most affectionate dog I have come across. He is fully house-trained and has never had an accident in the house. He no longer has any separation anxiety and is fine when you leave him alone. He no longer searches out food and no longer counter surfs. He still is not a fan of toys but loves his “stuffies”. He has no problem with cats and loves his play dates with his other Dane friend Sasha as well as his friends at doggy day care and Petsmart. He now barks when someone comes to the door but we call it his “indoor voice”, as he is only loud enough to let us know. He has learned many new commands and can be taught anything within a short period of time. Brollie is joy to foster and everyone who meets him falls in love with him.
Update 11-7-11 - Brollie was recently adopted into a home that had two cats, a very submissive dog, a guinea pig and four birds. Unfortunately, Brollie was returned back to his foster home as he was not getting along with the other animals. It appears there may have been too much going on in the household and he might be better off in a home that is a little calmer. Although he gets along with the cats in the neighborhood, he does not seem to do well in a closed in environment so he should not be placed in a home with cats. I believe he would do well in a home with another dog, possibly two dogs but he is picky about who he chooses to befriend. He would also do well alone as the King of his castle and having all the attention.
